In Bochum, a man intervened when an apartment on the third floor of an apartment building was on fire: he put out the fire himself, the police said.
In the early Saturday morning hours, several calls were received at the control center of the fire brigade.
But when the emergency services arrived, the fire had already been extinguished.
Six residents were still in the apartment on fire at the time and were rescued from the rooms.
The man who extinguished the fire was smoke inhaled and had to be looked after by the emergency services.
He was transported to a hospital for further treatment.
At half past two in the morning, the fire service was over.
A total of 45 emergency services were on site.
The police have started investigations into the cause of the fire and the damage caused by the fire.
