The Weekend's Disillusionment Journey Sounds Not Bad | Israel today

The Canadian pop star's new album does include some generic and unnecessary songs, but also brings to the world some great songs

"Dawn FM", De Weekend's fifth and new studio album, opens from all the voices precisely that of Jim Carrey.

The Canadian actor is used throughout the Canadian pop star's album on a super-standard, in a sort of radio station reminiscent of works like "Radio Bella Bella" by Natasha's friends.

"You've been in the dark for far too long," Carrie was heard saying in the opening remarks.

"It's time to step into the light and accept your fate with open arms. Afraid? Do not worry. We will be there to hold your hand and lead you along this painless change."

For those who did not understand - if until now De Weekend was enshrined in consciousness as a successful and dancing pop artist but without a statement, now Abel laments Tespay, the man behind the nickname, wants to tell you a slightly more meaningful story about him, his life and probably yours.

This is the idea behind this concept album, on the cover of which De Weekend appears in an older, fuller and grayer version.

If the albums that preceded it, and especially the last one "After Hours", dealt with the small hours of the night, dancing in dark spaces, humiliation and temporary encounters, the new album will take you, as its name implies, to the dawn.

The ones that force you to grow up and go out into the light and real life.

This is a great work, but not without its problems.

There are classic De Weekend songs that have become hits, like the single "Take My Breath".

There are also some that will surely become hits like "Gasoline", the excellent "Less than Zero" that appears at the end of the album, and also a Spoken Word segment by Quincy Jones.

On the other hand, there are also quite a few songs here, such as "Is There Someone Else", which could have appeared on any other album of the musician, and despite a glittering production - do not sound essentially different from each other.

Yes, we understand, De Weekend is doing eighties well.

But we already knew and heard that.

His voice here sounds clearer than ever (in the song "Out of Time" he reminds me of Michael Jackson more than ever), and there are worthy hosts here from prominent colleagues like Tyler the Creator and Lil Wayne.

But it’s hard to ignore the fact that the second part of the album had to be cut out.

If you still ignore a few generic songs and a repetition of the familiar stick, it's a fine album that takes its creator and us on a journey of sobriety and adolescence.

Were we wrong?

Fixed!
