Help!
Eric Adams, Mayor of New York
"This is going to be one of the worst fires in recent New York history."
The fire brigade uses turntable ladders to get people out of the building that has no outside stairs.
At least 200 rescue workers are on duty.
A woman is filming the scenes from across the street.
For at least 19 people, however, any help comes too late.
Nine children and young people are among the dead.
63 residents are injured.
Daniel Nigro, New York Fire Department
“The smoke spread over the entire height of the building, which was very unusual.
Firefighters found victims of cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest in the stairwells on every floor. "
The main fire was apparently triggered by a broken electric heater in an apartment on the first and second floors.
