The Golden Globe Awards were presented for the 79th time on Sunday evening.
Instead of a pompous gala with a red carpet and top-class stars, the organization announced the winners this year only via its social media.
The Golden Globes are awarded in 25 film and television categories.
In the series categories, the family
epic »Succession«
is the big winner this year with three prizes: The gloomy satire about the family power struggle in a media group was named the best drama series.
Jeremy Strong
was also named Best Actor in a Drama Series for his portrayal of exiled son Kendall Roy.
Sarah Snook
received the award for best TV supporting actress in the role of his sister Siobhan "Shiv" Roy.
In the comedy series,
»Hacks«
won over the work friendship between an aging Las Vegas entertainer and her younger gag writer.
For the main character, based on the old star Joan Rivers,
Jean Smart
also received the award for best comedy actress.
In the men's category,
Jason Sudeikis
won this category for the second year in a row as US football coach "Ted Lasso", who turned a British football team inside out.
The black historical drama
"The Underground Railroad"
was awarded as the best miniseries or television film.
Best leading actress in a drama series was
MJ Rodriguez
in "Pose" about the ballroom scene in New York in the 1980s. Other winners in the TV and mini-series categories included
Kate Winslet
as a small town detective in "Mare of Easttown" and
Michael Keaton
as a doctor in "Dopesick", as well as
O Yeung-su
as a senior participant in the murderous society satire "Squid Game" .
The fact that the award of the Golden Globes was not celebrated this year has something to do with the corona pandemic.
At the same time, the organization has long been criticized: Last year there was criticism that there were no blacks among the several dozen members of the jury and that the jurors of the association of the foreign press HFPA have often accepted privileges such as travel and expensive gala dinners.
The television station NBC then canceled the broadcast, and many film studios ended their cooperation with the HFPA.
Some stars, including Tom Cruise, gave their awards back.
In the film categories, the western
"The violence of the dogs"
won three Golden Globes.
It was named best drama in a movie.
Director
Jane Campion
also won the Director's Globe.
In addition to the New Zealander, Kenneth Branagh ("Belfast") and Steven Spielberg ("West Side Story") were nominated.
Australian supporting actor
Kodi was also named Smit-McPhee
for his role in the western
honored with a globe.
Spielberg's new edition of "West Side Story"
also won three Golden Globes
.
In addition to the award in the “Best Comedy / Musical” category, main actress
Rachel Zegler
and supporting actress
Ariana DeBose were also
honored.
Other winners in the drama category were Australian actress
Nicole Kidman
("Being the Ricardos") and her US colleague
Will Smith
, who plays the father of US tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams in the sports drama "King Richard".
Star composer
Hans Zimmer
won with his composition for the science fiction drama »Dune«.
It was the 14th nomination of the native of Frankfurt in the category "Best Film Music".
He already has two Globes: in 1995 he won for "The Lion King" and in 2001 for "Gladiator".
