On Monday lunchtime, an email was received in the central mailbox of Parliament in Magdeburg in which a stranger apparently threatened to detonate a bomb.

This was confirmed by a spokeswoman for the state parliament.

The threat was written under a pseudonym.

The police in Magdeburg confirmed a police operation in the state parliament.

The main building was cleared, officials searched the area with explosive detection dogs.

The members of the state parliament and all employees were asked by loudspeaker to leave the building.

"There are now a few dozen people waiting on the Cathedral Square," said the spokeswoman.

When the police investigations will be completed is still unclear.

Mainly administrative employees stayed in the state parliament.

Regular meetings have not yet started in the new year.
