Adapting Annie Ernaux, Audrey Diwan traces the journey of Anne, a young woman who unwittingly fell pregnant in conservative France in 1963. Abortion was then illegal and women had no other recourse than the clandestine route (and often fatal) to remedy this pregnancy which can destroy any professional and social future.
Physically trying, unadorned and carried by the deep gaze of the revelation Anamaria Vartolomei, the film leaves an indelible mark in the minds of the spectators.
