Cover letter, résumé, certificates: which application documents are still relevant in 2022?
A recent study provides the answer.
Many applicants will be happy: The cover letter is slowly but surely dying out.
Only every fifth DAX 40 company still
requests a cover letter when applying online.
This was the result of a study by the recruiting platform
Taledo
.
For the study, the required application documents and information for online applications for IT specialists from the DAX 40 companies and the 50 most highly financed start-ups in Germany were examined.
Application documents 2022: Most companies forego cover letters
Especially with large corporations, there is a growing trend towards not sending a cover letter when looking for applicants.
In January 2021, only 18 percent of the DAX 40 companies asked for a cover letter for online applications; according to
Taledo
, this figure rose slightly to 20 percent at the end of the year.
The energy supply group
RWE
as well as car manufacturers
Porsche and Daimler still insist on a letter
.
At Siemens, Deutsche Post and Adidas, letters of motivation can at least only optionally be attached to an application.
Most startups also set different priorities for their application documents.
Although 97 percent of the start-ups examined can include letters of motivation in their applications,
this is mandatory for only around 9 percent
.

Certificates when applying - for startups ever more insignificant
Not only is the cover letter becoming increasingly unpopular -
more and more employers also seem to be able to do without certificates
. Many start-ups also take the certificates from the mandatory information on their online application forms. According to
Taledo
, only one of the start-ups examined
still requires certificates, and another 13 start-ups give the option to add to the application. And only 12.5 percent of large corporations still insist on uploading certificates for their online applications.
The trend towards a simple application process has something positive for everyone involved.
"Germany's companies are realizing more and more that traditional application processes have no place in today's job market," explains Mengühan Ünver, founder and COO of Taledo.
"Applicants as well as the HR department prefer
fast, simple and efficient application
processes."
