Healthcare workers are having a rough time around the world because of the corona pandemic.
The Canadian politician Jon Reyes, Minister for Economic Development and Jobs in the Province of Manitoba probably knows this well, because his wife also works in a hospital.
How Reyes gives his wife recognition for her commitment, however, is now causing severe criticism on social media. "Even after a 12-hour night shift in the hospital last night, my wife still has the strength to shovel the driveway," Reyes wrote on Twitter on Saturday. "God bless you and all of our front-line fighters". He also posted a picture showing his wife Cynthia in front of the house while Reyes is apparently in the house.
The regional politician's tweet has now been shared and commented on thousands of times.
Users mocked the fact that Reyes had the leisure to take photos and tweet while his wife was working outside in the snow.
The fact that the politician had recently tweeted that he had stayed up late for a tennis match also caused outrage.
Some even suggested that she break up.
That Reyes had announced in the tweet that he would make breakfast for his wife didn't help.
"All I wanted was to shovel"
According to the Canadian broadcaster CBC, Reyes initially did not want to comment on the incident, but let it be known that he loves and appreciates his wife.
Meanwhile, she spoke up on Twitter herself - and apparently can't understand the excitement.
"All I wanted was to shovel," wrote Reyes.
To do this, she put the emoji of a woman who slaps her hand on her forehead.
On Facebook, she provided a more detailed explanation.
When she drove up the driveway after the shift on Saturday morning, she said she had "the energy to shovel away the snow that had fallen all night."
"It's a great workout, helped me unwind, and was refreshing after wearing an N95 mask for most of the night," Reyes wrote.
You enjoyed shoveling the snow.
What her husband wrote was "meant honestly and seriously."
She is grateful that he values her and what she does, and that he loves her and shows this publicly, Cynthia Reyes wrote on.
And: "No, I'm not going to divorce him because of the shoveling."
