In the Bavarian city of Hof, police officers showed goodwill: A 29-year-old man apparently wanted to steal a ciabatta bread in a bakery.
An employee and her boss held the man.
When the police arrived, they noticed that the alleged thief was wearing clothes that must have been stolen.
The sales signs and security labels were still on the jacket and pants.
The officers gave the man the stolen pants because otherwise he would have been half-naked.
The 29-year-old had previously tried on a jacket in a shop, the police said.
The saleswoman then lost sight of him.
"While he was returning the jacket, he had to be left with his trousers, otherwise he would have been undressed around the bottom," the police report said.
How he entered the shop, whether he was wearing his own trousers, could not be clarified.
He now has to answer for two shoplifters - he owes the business the money for the pants.
Pants and jacket together cost around 80 euros.
