The popular candle brand Yankee Candle has suffered a severe blow recently in light of repeated reviews of the quality of their scented candles. Many have written that the scented candles they purchased have a very faint and almost unrecognizable odor. "While others state that the smell of this candle is quite faint, I believe this candle has very little odor if any," wrote one user reviewer of one of the brand's candles and another added: "It will be more useful to me as lighting than to perfume room aroma." "It had no fragrance to it," a dissatisfied customer added and another wrote: "I was very disappointed. I will return it to the store and replace it with a candle with a different fragrance."

Twitter users have noticed that all the recent reviews of the brand's scented candles are negative - and have come up with an interesting theory: Is it Corona's fault?

That is, was the loss of sense of smell, one of the prominent symptoms of the disease, the one that led to the decline in the positive reviews for the scented candles?

Since this theory went viral, Twitter user Kate Petrova decided to look into the matter in depth and conducted a mini-research online that would confirm or deny the claim.

She posted the following graphs:

Petrova decided to dig into reviews of scented candles to see if there was any regular pattern to the negative feedback.

Very quickly it has noticed a consistent decline in product reviews since the beginning of 2020:

So true, correlation does not indicate causality.

There is a good chance that people who were forced to stay at home decided that they were a little tired of looking at candles all day, or that they simply decided to vent their restrained anger on the poor candles - and not on the people with whom they are stuck at home.

However, she seems to have come up with something.

When Petrova compared reviews of scented candles to odorless candles, the drop in rankings was much steeper for scented candles:

When looking at the data from the beginning of 2020, the difference is even more noticeable:

Wait, Petrova's study did not end there.

Next she decided to collect reviews that explicitly mention odorlessness - and quantify the data.

Since there are not enough people writing detailed reviews on candles, it has expanded its search database to the top 5 scented candles from 4 different brands:

The trend continues right up to the present day, with bad reviews of odorless scented candles in a way that corresponds well with recent corona waves.

And the comparison between the waves and the reviews:

As can be seen from the data, it certainly seems that people are complaining about odorless scented candles when a new wave of adhesion reaches its peak.

So the next time you come to write a bad review about fragrant or edible products - you should move a pen first.
