David Sassoli was a passionate journalist, an ordinary President of the European Parliament and above all a dear friend". The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, writes in a tweet in Italian.
"My thoughts go out to his family. Rest in peace, dear David," he adds. "David Sassoli has left us. Terrible news for all of us in Italy and Europe. We will remember your figure as a democratic and pro-European leader. You were a cool, generous, cheerful, popular man. A hug to the family. Rest in peace", he wrote in a tweet the EU Commissioner for Economic Affairs Paolo Gentiloni, while the President of the EU Council, Charles Michel,underlined (ANSA).
