Shawarma is fun, but 83 shekels?

Are we crazy?

(For the avoidance of doubt - the photographed shawarma has nothing to do with the article) (Photo: Walla !, Yaniv Granot)

One of the last Saturdays I drove to Bloomfield, after quite a while of not visiting the stadium. Playing on a wintry Saturday at three in the afternoon, in the heart of one of the best culinary areas in the country, just called me to come. I made an appointment with a friend an hour before the opening whistle, we drove to a famous shawarma in the center of Jaffa. A plate laden with every good and next to it a small Zero Cola bottle. the good life. We ordered and paid without asking questions. NIS 75 plate, NIS 8 for drinks.

83 shekels. Yes, that was the bill.

Basically, at this point, in early 2022, none of us should be surprised, certainly not an expert wormologist like the writer of these lines. After all, not yesterday I started eating shawarma, my favorite fruit. After all, pita has long cost around NIS 40, Lafa kisses 50 and in some places has already changed its prefix. I have already arrived at a plate that scratched the 70 shekels, and if you order in Volt it will come with the delivery and the tip for an even higher amount. So why was the number "83" so powerful,Much more than I would like to think it will be?

More than a week has passed, and the thought still bothers me. Not on a metaphorical level, not in a section of repression or inner humor - she really sits there in her head, hitting in full force. Like a father who heard on his parents' day at school that his son was not as successful as he thought (a story from life), so he also slapped in the face of the disappointing reality and with it the realization that what was dead yesterday, long live the bleak tomorrow.

It was not the end. Three days passed. My wife and I, on one of those few evenings we prefer not to curl up on the couch in front of mediocre TV shows, were looking for a nice place to sit. We were locked in a cafe in the center of Tel Aviv. As savvy consumers we checked the menu online to avoid bumping. We discovered creme brulee there for NIS 59. So we settled in another, more popular place, where a sandwich, pretzel and two beers cost us 142 shekels before a tip. Then, quite by accident, the photo that our veteran photographer Reuven Castro uploaded to the Knesset app also came up, with a charge of NIS 50 for the Cola Zero six.

Reality is changing even more radically than we have known, and we have no choice but to look at it with our eyes closed.

There is no point and no reason to be naive. Calls for a consumer uprising exhausted themselves in the cottage protest a decade ago. Learning from experience, we know that even if our cry is heard, those who have not been able to push us up through the door will bounce prices through the window. So we swallowed the "rise in transportation prices" and "the rise in input prices" (what wonderful concepts) and we are ready to pay NIS 5,000 for a weekend in Eilat. We ate one loch, we ate another at an exorbitant price. We have become this place where the Japanese laugh that watermelon costs a million shekels, just as we ourselves did until very recently.

The talk about the cost of living has long since been exhausted. We all know that we are torn and cut and that we are suckers with "shoot and cry" syndrome, but this point was too sensitive and I found myself doing a real and poignant mental arithmetic: Has the shawarma era really ended for me on a plate? Will I ever have the courage to spend NIS 59 on dessert? Will I order a sandwich and two beers without being tormented?

Okay, back to the pita (Photo: Kobi Rubin)

Strange to look at it this way, but the last few weeks have made it clear, to me at least if not to many others of us, that we are in a war of existence over things that have hitherto seemed trivial.

It's a shaky thought.

After all, history is saturated with disasters a little bigger than the increase in the price of a shawarma dish, and it should definitely be looked at in the right proportion, and in general, if the most significant rate I have received so far cost me NIS 83, it is probably significantly lower than the rate they received before parents send their children to kindergarten. , Or tenants who dream of living in the center.

And yet, sorry for the French - Kusmo.

The thought is depressing, but it is impossible to end without an optimistic message.

A well-known consensus in the industry is that shawarma is eaten in pita.

Not in a loaf, not on a plate, certainly not in a baguette.

If so, I will go back to the sources and relish the dish that all the experts recommend.

The bonus: it only costs NIS 39-41 per serving.

Excluding her voice.

Half Price.
