In order to keep the gutter in good condition, you must regularly clean it of leaves and dirt.

You can find out which tools are required for this here.

It's a chore, but it should be done: cleaning the gutter.

Especially in autumn, many fallen leaves * accumulate here, making it difficult for rainwater to run off.

If you wait too long to clean, you often have more problems later than before.

What to watch out for when cleaning the gutter.

How often does the gutter need to be cleaned?

Gutters are generally resistant to frost, wind, rain and heat.

Nevertheless, over time, moss and other dirt accumulate, which can prevent the rainwater from draining off properly.

If there is a lot of dirt, the gutter can even break, meaning that it has to be soldered or partially replaced.

In addition, dirt can also collect in the downpipe, which ensures that the water backs up. If it then comes to

frost

, the pipe can even burst.

Therefore, the gutter should be cleared

of leaves and dirt

at least twice a year, in spring and autumn .

Which tools do you need for gutter cleaning?

To avoid damage to the rain gutter and the facade, it must be cleaned regularly.

You can usually collect the most important utensils for this from the household:

  • ladder

  • Shovel and bucket

  • brush

  • Rag

  • gloves

Make sure the ladder has a secure pole and is securely fastened before climbing it. Wetness can make it slippery, so you should be extra careful. Once at the

top, you should first

cover the downpipe

so that no leaves get into it when cleaning. Use a small shovel to remove the coarse dirt from the gutter and convey it into the bucket. Then you can sweep up the remaining loosened dirt with a brush and push it into the bucket as well. Then wipe the rain gutter clean with a rag.

Now check that the downpipe is free by pouring a bucket of water into it from above.

If it is not permeable enough, you can insert a pipe cleaning spiral into the downpipe from above and turn it several times.

This loosens the dirt and can then be rinsed out.

How much does a gutter cleaning cost?

If you are unsure whether you are doing it right or are afraid of climbing the ladder, you can easily have the job done by a professional.

The costs for this are usually between

2.50 and 4 euros per meter of gutter

.

A further 7 euros may be incurred for cleaning the gutter box, and the travel costs must also be taken into account.

Cleaning the gutter: who pays the costs - tenant or landlord?

Whether the tenant or landlord has to pay for the gutter cleaning costs depends on whether they are

maintenance or operating costs

acts. It falls into the former category if it is a one-time cleaning that needs to be done due to clogging or damage. Then the landlord is obliged to pay the costs. However, if the gutter needs to be cleaned on a regular basis due to the presence of trees in the vicinity, the costs may be passed on to the tenant. It is important, however, that the type of operating costs "gutter cleaning" is expressly mentioned in the rental agreement and that these are not only included in the other operating costs, as the tenants' association reports on the basis of a ruling by the Federal Court of Justice (VIII ZR 167/03 and VIII ZR 146/03).
