A huge fire destroyed dozens of homes in a slum in the city of Iquique, in northern Chile.
Videos relayed by Chilean firefighters and witnesses show an impressive plume of black smoke, several hundred meters in circumference, visible for miles around.
For long hours, hundreds of firefighters fought with little in the way of the flames.

Because in this city ghetto, which overlooks the Laguna Verde, there is no water access point.
The authorities therefore had to transport dozens of tankers to the site to allow the firefighters to connect their hoses.
Around 100 homes have been destroyed and nearly 400 people are left homeless.
The origin of the fire remains unknown.
