There is no Israeli who can forget May 12, 2021. Incidents of violence between Jews and Arabs throughout the country lost control, pogroms in the streets, lynchings in Lod, Acre and Bat Yam, and the arson of businesses in the city of Acre, including the Acre Hotel, the Mercato Restaurant, the Effendi Hotel and the Uri Buri Restaurant. The last two belong to the restaurant Uri Jeremias, probably one of the most special people walking among us.

While we all went on with our lives, with a painful memory of one of the most difficult weeks in the history of the country, Jeremiah lived that memory every day. Unlike many others, it is not driven by hatred, but rather by hope. He woke up to a new morning, of restoring the many ruins, of rebuilding, and not just physically.

The Effendi Hotel, one of the most beautiful and special hotels in the country, remains in relatively good condition, where most of the restoration work has dealt with rescuing the valuable works of art in the place, and the hotel returned to operation 3 months ago.

But Uri Buri Restaurant, one of the most prominent culinary institutions in the city of Acre, needed serious renovation and rebuilding.

For 8 months they worked here every day, until yesterday, she returned to activity, and opened to the general public, for the first time since that horrible night.

And it's not that meanwhile Jeremiah is resting, three weeks after the fire he set up an alternate place, at the Naaman Gate in Acre, where he served exactly the same food he has been serving for many years in his restaurant. Jeremiah is not a man who will sit idly by and wait, he wanted to be busy and take care of his staff for employment at this time, so as not to lose him. "On Saturday at midnight we took out the last dish at the alternative restaurant," Jeremias told me this week, in the reopening of the original Uri Buri. "Yesterday we made a meal here for the workers who did the renovation, until yesterday at seven in the evening they were still working here, and we wanted to thank them for that work."

Was it hard to rebuild everything?

"I do not know what it's hard" says Jeremiah with a smile under his famous mustache. "There was work with a lot of details, with perseverance, the hard understanding that the enemy of the good is the best, so we were constantly asked when to stop the improvements. Any significant thing we could change - we changed, to a level that is really hard to believe."

Did you have no doubt that you would open here again?

"No doubt. The day after the fire, when I was interviewed, I announced that I was reopening."

Wasn't there one moment that broke you during this time?

"Look what I look like, can something break me? Nothing. I have a team that is rare in quality and that would strengthen the work of us all together."

The festive opening event was also honored in his presence by the new American Ambassador to Israel, Thomas Nides, who turns out to be no small feat.

After tweeting on his Twitter account, that upon entering the role that V marked on Zion's schnitzel on Hayarkon Street, he said at the opening event that frequented Uri Buri restaurant (the alternative) during one of his first weeks in the country that he read about it in the New York Times.

Niles said excitedly that he sat down to eat with Jeremiah and was very impressed by the food, but especially by Jeremiah's human relations. " "He just told me about every waiter, every service provider, every cook, everyone's story, who he is and where he comes from."

what are we eating?

There is not much new in the restaurant itself.

It is not designed as the best new and trendy restaurants, its appearance is simple and clean, with large windows overlooking the sea of Acre.

Because when there is such a view, who needs more than that?

The same is true of food.

In the Uri Buri Model 2022, you will also find the same iconic dishes that Jeremias has been serving at the place for years.

As always, in the center of the stage there is an abundance of the freshest fish there is, some in a fairly clean serving, and some in slightly more sophisticated versions.

Among the place's flagship dishes are salmon sashimi - slices of fresh salmon in soy sauce, with wasabi sorbet (NIS 52), or cevir musar - chunks of sea fish in lemon, olive oil, capers and purple onion (NIS 53), there is baby spoon - spoon fish In caramel, with beets and chives (NIS 54), seafood soup, in different sizes of your choice, octopus in arak and pakos (NIS 53), St. Jacques cookies (NIS 85/142) and many more goodies.

"Uri is a lighthouse, an extraordinary person, who continues despite what happened in the restaurant and the hotel," concluded the opening ceremony of the Mayor of Acre, Shimon Lankri. "All the owners of the restaurants and hotels return with all their might.

We have no other way.

We live here together, different peoples, different cultures.

I call on all residents of Israel - come here. "
