(ANSA) - BRUSSELS, JAN 12 - EU emissions in the energy and industry sectors decreased by more than 11% between 2019 and 2020, the most significant annual decline since 2005. But without new interventions in the coming years, the reduction in emissions should result " considerably slower "than the historical series.
These are updated data from the European Environment Agency.
The total emissions of the sectors covered by the ETS, the EU carbon trading system, decreased by 11.4% between 2019 and 2020 (-11% in Italy), exceeding the record decrease of 9%, recorded between 2018 and 2019. A result of the suspension of economic activities due to the pandemic, underlines the EU Agency.
This is also demonstrated by the emissions of aircraft operators covered by Ets (for intra-EU flights), which fell by 63.5%.
Based on current and planned measures, the Agency expects emissions to continue to decline over the next decade, between 41 and 48% compared to 2005.
It is, underlines the AEA, a "considerably slower pace than in the past".
