(ANSA) - ROME, 12 JAN - More than half of patients with self-reported long-term altered perception of taste following Covid-19 actually have normal gustatory function when evaluated with validated psychophysical tests. This was revealed by an international survey led by the University of Trieste and which also involves the University of Bari, in particular by Dr. Paolo Boscolo-Rizzo, and published in JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery.

The research examined whether psychophysical tests confirmed a self-reported taste alteration among patients three or more months after Covid infection. The analysis included 105 Italian adults with psychophysical evaluation performed an average of 226 days after the onset of the disease.

The researchers found that 98.1% of the participants had mildly symptomatic Covid-19 with no evidence of pneumonia. Almost all patients (94.3%) had self-reported associated olfactory damage. However, the score attributed on the basis of a specific test showed that the prevalence of hypogeusia, that is the loss of taste, was 41.9% and dropped to 28.6% when adjusted for age. Only 3 of 105 patients (2.9%) also presented with hypogeusia and were normosmic, that is, with normal sense of smell, on psychophysical evaluation.

"The study - conclude the authors - reveals an overestimation of self-reported taste impairment and supports the use of validated psychophysical tests to estimate the load of sensory dysfunction in people with Covid-19 in the long term. While the olfactory training can help a group of patients, additional strategies may be needed for those with gustatory impairment. "
