Winter time is mandarin time.

The orange fruits can be found in every supermarket.

Our tips reveal how to choose the best specimens.

Healthy, juicy and a tasty snack for in between: these are

mandarins

.

All the more annoying when you have bought a whole network and then it turns out at home that all the fruits in it are very dry or too sour or are terribly difficult to peel.

But how do you know in the supermarket whether they are good tangerines * or whether you should keep your hands off them?

With these tips you will never go wrong again.

Four Shopping Tips: How To Spot Good Tangerines

  • The weight:

    prefer heavier specimens.

Because the longer a mandarine is no longer hanging on the tree, the more juice it loses and the lighter it becomes.

  • The peel:

It should be firm and not give in so quickly under light pressure.

Softness is a sign that the fruit has already lost a lot of juice.

  • The color:

The tear-off point, i.e. the place where the tangerine was picked from the branch, should be as white as possible.

If it is brown, the fruit has already dried out.

  • Stem and leaves:

If there are even leaves hanging on the mandarins, that is a good sign of freshness.

In addition, you should of course only choose mandarins that have an

undamaged skin

that has no bruises, cracks or scratches.

Mold can easily form there.

Mandarins vs. clementines

Small, round, orange: tangerines and clementines have many similarities.

After all, clementines are also a cross between mandarins and bitter orange.

But this is how the fruits differ: In contrast to mandarins,

clementines

are seedless and have a thinner skin.

Their pulp tastes sweet, whereas

tangerines

taste a little bit sour.

But they are juicy and aromatic.

Fresh fruits: this is the best way to store tangerines

Mandarins should be

stored in a cool place

- but not in the refrigerator, as it is

too cold there, like all

citrus fruits

. Instead, they feel comfortable in the pantry or in the basement, where it is kept cool. Do not stack several mandarins on top of each other, but next to each other and not too tightly, for example in a basket or in an air-permeable bowl with holes. Correctly stored mandarins can be

fresh for several weeks

stay and be eaten.

At room temperature, however, the fruits should be consumed within a few days because they dry out and spoil more quickly.

If you discover mold on a fruit, it should be discarded.

Another important tip: Do not store mandarins and the like together with ripening fruits and vegetables such as apples and bananas.

These produce the ripening gas ethylene and allow other fruits to spoil more quickly.
