The image of this baby lifted at arm's length by a father and entrusted to a foreign soldier had traveled the world. On August 19, in the midst of chaos on the tarmac at Kabul airport, thousands of Afghans tried to flee the Taliban regime which had just taken over the country. In the middle of the crowd, Mirza Ali Ahmadi fears for the safety of her two-month-old baby and hands him to a soldier. But he loses sight of him. For three days, he and his wife will try to find him in a crowded airport. In vain. In desperation, this former US Embassy security guard flies to the United States with his wife and their four other children.
An Afghan taxi driver, who lives in Kabul, picked up the baby.
“That day I ran into this baby who was on the floor at the airport, alone, crying.
I asked around if he was someone and no one answered.
So I took it with me.
And with my wife, we took care of it like our own child, ”says Hamid Safi.

Five months later, Sohail's family was able to track him down in Kabul, helped by social media and the police.
On January 10, the boy was entrusted to his grandfather, who still lives in Kabul.
Heartbreaking separations for the Safi couple, who took care of Sohail like their own son.
The child's parents, who now live in the United States, have contacted the American authorities so that their baby can join them.
But the process could be long.
