(ANSA) - NEW YORK, 13 JAN - The UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, has launched an appeal to the leadership of the Albanians in Afghanistan to "recognize and protect the fundamental human rights of women and girls".

"Across the country they have disappeared from offices and classrooms, a generation of girls are seeing their hopes and dreams shattered," she explained, stressing that "no country can prosper while denying the rights of half of its population."

Guterres reiterated that "the United Nations is ready to cooperate and support the Afghan authorities so that this is possible with the utmost urgency".

And "moving forward, it is also essential that every effort be made to build inclusive government institutions in which all Afghans are represented, which promote security and fight terrorism."
