(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 13 - After an evening of clashes and strong tensions between demonstrators and police in Beirut, in front of the headquarters of the disputed Central Bank, the "day of anger" began today throughout Lebanon, a protest strike initially called by the union of drivers of public transport and to which many other professional figures have joined. There is protest at the new increase in the prices of basic necessities, such as petrol and bread, following the umpteenth depreciation of the local lira. A US dollar is now traded with 33,000 lire, while just two years ago a dollar was worth 1,500 lire at the fixed exchange rate. Throughout the day today, schools, universities and banks will remain closed, while drivers of public transport will block the main roads throughout Lebanon, cutting off traffic.Yesterday evening, dozens of protesters protested in front of the central bank headquarters in Beirut and protracted clashes with law enforcement took place. Other incidents could occur today in Beirut and in other epicenters of the protest.
Lebanon has experienced its worst financial crisis in decades since the autumn of 2019.
The government announced a default in March 2020. And negotiations are underway between the Lebanese authorities and the International Monetary Fund to study measures to save the country's wrecked economy.
