In Ostia, the district of Rome overlooking the sea, a mafia clan was active, that of the Spada. This was definitively sanctioned by the Supreme Court in the sentence pronounced today in the context of the maxi trial involving 17 leaders and affiliates of the criminal group. The judges substantially accepted the requests of the Attorney General and ordered a new appeal process for the double murder of November 22, 2011 when Giovanni Galleoni known as 'Baficchio' and Francesco Antonini known as 'Sorcanera' were killed in the center of Ostia. , two members of a rival clan. In the new trial, Roberto Spada must appear as defendants, already reached by a definitive sentence for the newspaper inflicted on a RAI journalist, Ottavio Spada (known as Marco) and Carmine Spada. The first two defendants had been sentenced to life imprisonment in the first appeal process for this affair, while Carmine had been acquitted of this charge and had seen the sentence reduced to 17 years in prison.

For the rest, the Piazza Cavour judges rejected the appeals of the other defendants, which were deemed inadmissible.

The accusatory system of the Capitoline Prosecutor has therefore resisted the scrutiny of the Supreme Court. In the appeal process, the judges, recognizing the mafia-type criminal association, had imposed sentences for a total of 147 years in prison and acquitted 7 defendants. Depending on the position, the disputed crimes also included extortion as well as the fictitious registration of assets and activities.

In particular, in January of last year the second instance judges inflicted 16 years on Ottavio Spada, called Maciste, 9 years Nando De Silvio, called Focanera and 8 years on Ruben Alvez del Puerto, who was also involved in the attack on the Rai journalist. On the other hand, Armando Spada, Enrico Spada, Roberto Spada known as Ziba of the same name as the sentenced to life imprisonment, Francesco De Silvio, Sami Serour, Stefano De Dominicis and Roberto Sassi were acquitted.

The maxi trial is linked to the arrests that took place on January 25, 2018. According to the investigators, the criminal group had, in fact, "taken possession" of a piece of the city. A clan that, according to the indictment, has carried out a real attack on the territory: "a criminal association - wrote the investigating judge in the precautionary custody order - which caused a profound degradation" in the Ostia area "allowing the spread of very serious crimes damaging primary assets ". A mafia that rests "its power on the family-based organization and the division of competences". The arrests came also thanks to the contribution of four collaborators of justice.

"Today's sentence - commented the lawyer Giulio Vasaturo, of the Libera association that appeared as a civil party in the trial - definitively recognizes the mafia scenario that has long conditioned the reality of Ostia. This pronouncement delivers a truth to history procedural now intangible which serves to disprove those who have so far minimized the presence and pervasiveness of the mafias in the city of Rome ".

For his part, the deputy M5S, Francesco D'Uva affirms that the "Movement with Virginia Raggi as mayor has made maximum efforts against crime in the capital. Legality is and will always be our priority".
