Among other things, they are accused of "inciting fornication" and "violence against women". In Morocco, five professors are charged with sexual harassment. One of them has now been sentenced to two years in prison.

A court in Morocco has found a university professor guilty of "indecent conduct", "violence" and "sexual harassment".

The professor of economics at a university in Settat near Casablanca was sentenced to two years in prison.

The court found it proven that he gave high marks in exchange for sex.

It is the first verdict in the sex scandal that is rocking the university landscape in the conservative country.

The professor was indicted along with four other colleagues in December. Among other things, they are accused of "inciting fornication" and "violence against women". The other four defendants are due to appear again in court on Thursday. One of the plaintiffs reportedly waived further legal action in exchange for 70,000 dirhams (€ 6,640) in compensation.

The scandal was publicized by local media in September after lewd messages between one of the prosecuted professors and his students surfaced on internet platforms.

Since then there have been further revelations at other universities.

A lecturer at a university in Oujda was recently suspended.

According to local media reports, he is also said to have demanded sexual acts from female students in exchange for good grades.

Several cases of sexual harassment of female students by their professors in Moroccan universities had been reported in the past few years.

Most of the time, however, no official complaints were submitted and if they did, they usually remained without consequences.

According to women's rights groups, sexual violence is widespread in the North African country, but victims rarely report the alleged perpetrators for fear of reprisals and reputational damage.

After years of heated debates, Morocco introduced tougher penalties for sexual harassment, abuse and ill-treatment in 2018.

The pressure on the authorities to actually enforce this had recently increased further.
