More and more people are currently infected with the Coronavirus variant Omikron.

New surveys show where the risk of infection is greatest.

The highly contagious virus variant Omikron is responsible for more and more coronavirus infections. In the first calendar week of 2022, 68,598 Omicron infections were detected in Germany, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the leading biomedical research institution of the German federal government. And the numbers will in all likelihood continue to rise. According to the Tagesschau, the World Health Organization (WHO) warns of massive omicron spread.

The WHO even assumes that more than 50 percent of the population in Europe could become infected with Omikron in the next six to eight weeks.

As early as the first week of 2022, there were more than seven million newly reported Covid 19 cases in Europe, which more than doubled within two weeks,

tagesschau.de

quotes WHO European Director Hans Kluge. The good news: According to the current state of knowledge, Omikron does not seem to be any more dangerous than other mutants *. “

The risk of hospital admission to the emergency room with Omikron was only about a third as high as with Delta

According to a publication by the UK Health Security Agency. According to a cited study of UK health data, the report found "the risk of hospitalization for Omikron cases is lower after two and three doses of vaccine, with the risk of hospitalization after three doses 81 percent lower than for unvaccinated Omicron cases" .

However, the rapid spread of the highly contagious Omicron variant means that more people than ever before become infected in a short time.

Since the physical reactions to the infection differ greatly from person to person - some do not feel anything, others feel slight cold symptoms, others have to be treated as an inpatient - it is important to protect yourself as well as possible.

Above all through the corona vaccination.

"

The COVID-19 vaccination is the safest way to build up protection against COVID-19," informs the RKI and, like most other health authorities, appeals for a vaccination.

Where most people get infected with Corona

Avoiding so-called hotspots is also one of the most important infection protection measures. These are cities and regions that report particularly high corona incidences.

But do most of the people get infected there? An RKI survey provides answers.

In a table, the RKI shows reported corona cases that have been assigned to an outbreak by the health authorities (an event with two or more reported corona cases is classified as an outbreak). The cases are broken down according to the environment of the infection (setting), i.e. the location in which the infection * probably took place. In response to a request from

Focus Online

, the RKI stated that there are many settings "in which outbreaks are difficult to detect because those affected usually do not know the close contacts there."

In addition, only a relatively small proportion of the number of cases reported by the health authorities to an outbreak assigned, which also makes it difficult to pinpoint specific places of infection

, according to

Focus Online

.

As can be seen from the RKI table, a total of 198,287 corona infections were reported in the 52nd calendar week (December 27, 2021 to January 2, 2022)

that could not be assigned to an outbreak and therefore no place of infection.

The remaining cases recorded in the last week of 2021 were assigned by the RKI to the following places of infection:

  • Private households: 4,360

  • Retirement and nursing homes: 587

  • Diner / restaurant: 161

  • Hospital: 132

  • Kindergarten / after-school care center: 124

  • Workplace: 100

  • Public transport: 13
