Many parents are familiar with the catchy tune: the children's song "Baby Shark" has now been viewed more than ten billion times on YouTube.

It is not only the most watched video on the platform.

As YouTube confirmed at the request of the US broadcaster CNN, it is also the first to break the ten billion mark.

The video shows two children performing the "Baby Shark Dance".

An animated family of sharks swims in the background.

As the song progresses, the sharks try to chase the kids.

However, they fail and the children celebrate their triumph.

The sharks watch from afar.

The lyrics tell the story in simple sentences.

In between, the children keep singing »doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo«.

The origins of the nursery rhyme are not known.

According to information from the Canadian radio station CBC, it may have existed as a folk song as early as the 20th century.

An earlier recording appeared on YouTube in 2011, with US children's DJ Johnny Only on vocals.

The video shows scenes from a youth holiday camp.

There, too, several children show the shark dance at a swimming pool.

A version by Alexandra Müller alias Alemuel is even older.

In 2007, the user uploaded a joking part of the song to YouTube under the title »Little Shark«.

To date, the video has garnered more than 23 million views.

Due to its popularity, the song got a CD recording.

The piece made it into the German single charts for several weeks.

Today's best-known version comes from Pinkfong, a South Korean media label for children.

After debuting on YouTube in 2016, the song quickly became a viral hit.

At the children's channel Nickelodeon he got his own animated series, with the eponymous Baby Shark in the leading role.

The broadcaster has already announced a new season for spring 2022.

Incidentally, the song also appears in the US series »Ted Lasso«: Phil Dunster sings the melody as the fictional soccer player Jamie Tartt in a goal celebration scene.

He replaces the words "Baby Shark" with his own name.

With ten billion views, the YouTube video is ahead of musician Luis Fonsi with his song »Despacito«.

The video has garnered 7.7 billion views so far.
