Not only for housing benefit recipients should there be a heating cost subsidy in summer. Students who receive student loans also want to support the traffic light coalition.

Bafög recipients can count on the fact that they too will receive the heating cost subsidy planned by the traffic light coalition for housing benefit recipients.

This point was brought into the ongoing legislative process, said Federal Minister of Education Bettina Stark-Watzinger of the dpa news agency.

At "Bild", the FDP politician had previously called for Bafög recipients to be included in the subsidy payment.

Regarding the implementation, she told the dpa: "It has a good chance because it has now been included in the departmental vote and will also be included in the decision-making process in the Bundestag."

Students also suffered particularly badly in the crisis, said Stark-Watzinger.

"Many could not keep their part-time jobs and many are still burdened by the high energy costs." That is why it is right that they are also taken into account in the heating cost surcharge.

According to »Bild«, the Ministry of Education expects around 420,000 beneficiaries, including schoolchildren who no longer live with their parents and who receive student loans, as well as recipients of the so-called ascent student loan.

According to the previous plans of building minister Klara Geywitz (SPD), housing benefit recipients who live alone should receive a subsidy of 135 euros in the summer because of the high energy prices.

EUR 175 is provided for two-person households, and EUR 35 more for each additional flatmate.

This is intended to cushion possible high utility bills that could come in the summer.

As a rule, people with low incomes who do not otherwise receive social benefits such as Hartz IV can apply for housing benefit.
