In view of the rapid spread of the omicron variant of the corona virus, the Education and Science Union (GEW) has warned of further learning gaps in schools.
In order to prevent this, affected teachers should also teach from the quarantine in order to "keep the loss of lessons as low as possible," said GEW boss Maike Finnern of the "Wirtschaftswoche" - at least if someone is not ill but only has to isolate themselves as a contact person .
However, an additional person would still be necessary on site, because nobody could guarantee the duty of supervision in the classroom from the computer at home.
According to the Finns, it is also questionable whether the "technical prerequisites are even available in the school" for such hybrid teaching.
Good digital teaching would fail because, according to a GEW study from 2021, 50 percent of schools do not have reliable WiFi and “collapse if too many students try to log in at the same time, for example to talk to a teacher who is in quarantine , to connect«.
The GEW boss also called for millions to be invested in the provision of masks.
Regular changing is important right now, but many children would wear the masks for days.
"That's why we now need a well-stocked special pot with funds from which funds for masks can be called up quickly and unbureaucratically," said Finnern.
"Sure it will cost millions, but safe teaching should be worth it to the federal and state governments."
