The Essen police have been looking for a detainee who escaped from a clinic since Thursday.

This was announced by the Essen police and the Essen prison.

The man fled the Essen Huyssenstift in the southern district of Huttrop in the afternoon.

Hundreds of armed men were out during the day, and fewer officers searched in the evening and at night.

According to a spokeswoman, the area around the hospital is now being “intensively searched”.

Man is said to have escaped while going to the toilet

According to the police, there is no danger from the fugitive.

According to the Essen JVA, the man is 25 years old and has been in custody since the end of November on suspicion of fraud.

He had "so far been inconspicuous", had not attracted negative attention and "appeared politely".

He had been in the Huyssenstift since January 6 for jaw surgery.

He had previously been treated in the Fröndenberg Judicial Hospital.

According to official information, the escape was successful, although two officers were responsible for guarding him.

According to a spokesman for the Essen JVA, they should always be in the "immediate vicinity" of the guard, for example in the hospital room itself. The state Ministry of Justice confirmed to SPIEGEL that the man fled when he went to the toilet.

The “Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung” had previously reported this.
