Almost 40 percent of Germans never negotiate their salary.

There is almost always a small increase in it.

We show how much employees expect on average.

Many employees get sweaty hands at the thought of a

salary negotiation

with their boss.

Fearing rejection, many workers shy away from an opportunity to ask for a raise.

There is almost always an increase in wages.

Salary negotiation: Almost 40 percent of Germans never negotiate their salary

A representative survey of 2,000 people by the financial service provider

WeltSparen.de

reveals some details about how Germans feel about salary negotiations:

  • 38 percent of Germans have never negotiated their wages.

  • A quarter of the employees have never had a salary increase.

  • Around nine percent rely on the bargaining power of a trade union or employee representative body.

  • Five percent are waiting for the employer to approach them.

  • Another five percent were only able to achieve a higher income by changing jobs.

Good to know:

Didn't get a raise?

Three reasons why you have come away empty-handed so far.

Salary increase solely due to demographic development

It is a pity that many employees shy away from salary negotiations, because the chances of a wage increase are currently good.

Economists are forecasting high salary increases in the coming years due to demographic developments.

"On average, wage increases of

five percent a year are realistic

," said Gabriel Felbermayr, head of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) in the

Bild

newspaper.

He is referring to the fact that the number of available workers will gradually decrease from 2023 at the latest.

In the future, companies will therefore compete for fewer and fewer employees.

What is the average salary increase?

Salary negotiation can be financially rewarding. Employees can

usually expect a salary increase of three to ten percent

, as the study by

WeltSparen

shows. Eleven percent of the Germans surveyed have so far achieved a maximum salary increase of three to five percent. Nine percent received one to three percent, seven percent of those surveyed were able to look forward to an increase of over seven to ten percent. For eight percent even more than ten percent were in it - five percent even achieved more than 15 percent salary increase.

So it makes sense to regularly renegotiate your salary.

As a rule of thumb, employment law experts recommend

going back into negotiations no more

than 18 to 24 months after a salary increase.

By the way, this shows that you are underpaid.
