A corona vaccination has been recommended for 12 to 17-year-olds in Germany since August.

Until now, there has been a lack of clarity as to whether children and young people should also have boosters.

The Standing Vaccination Committee (Stiko) has generally spoken out in favor of a corona booster vaccination for children and adolescents aged 12 to 17.

The committee recommends a so-called booster vaccination for this age group with the mRNA vaccine Comirnaty from Biontech/Pfizer

"in the age-appropriate dosage" and at least three months after the previous vaccination, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced.

Commenting procedure with the federal states follows

The draft decision of the recommendation now has to go through a so-called commenting procedure with the federal states and the specialist groups involved, so it is not yet a final recommendation.

The current situation with the sharp increase in the number of cases due to the omicron variant* makes it necessary to expand the vaccination campaign accordingly

, it was said in justification.

A booster vaccination improves the vaccination protection that decreases a few months after the basic immunization and also reduces the probability of transmission of corona infections.

So far, booster vaccinations for children and young people from the age of

twelve

have been handled differently in the federal states.

The Stiko had previously recommended a booster vaccination for all adults over the age of 18.

Second vaccine dose at Johnson&Johnson with mRNA vaccine

In December, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) approved a second dose of the vaccine for the second vaccination of the Johnson&Johnson vaccine, in which the primary immunization comprises only one vaccination.

However, Stiko now wants to recommend that all people over the age of 18 optimize their basic immunization with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine with a second vaccine dose of an mRNA vaccine.

An mRNA vaccine is also recommended for the booster vaccination at least three months after the second dose of the basic immunization

, it said.

According to Stiko, this draft resolution also went into the commenting process.

A few weeks ago, Stiko stated that a single dose of the vector vaccine did not provide sufficient protection and that improvement with a dose of Biontech/Pfizer or Moderna was recommended.

Very low risk of serious vaccine side effects

Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) welcomed the plans.

"Now all young people and their parents have certainty: Boosters are also recommended for 12 to 17 year olds," he said according to the announcement.

The committee once again made it clear that a Johnson & Johnson vaccination can only be counted as a vaccination.

"

These are important assessments that are relevant to everyday life

," says Lauterbach.

He had already made it clear at the end of December that children and young people between the ages of 12 and 17 were fundamentally entitled to booster vaccinations.

Stiko recommends booster shots after three months

The Stiko pointed out that the data on the effectiveness and safety of the booster vaccination in 12 to 17 year olds is still limited.

"

However, the risk of serious vaccination side effects is estimated to be very low

", it said.

Vaccination reactions are to be expected as after the second vaccine dose or the booster vaccination in 18 to 25 year olds.

The Stiko is an independent body.

It develops vaccination recommendations and looks at the

benefits for the individual and the entire population

.

The experts evaluate international data and studies for this purpose.

The recommendations are considered the medical standard, according to the Stiko website.
