The new year brings some important changes for many taxpayers. A little financial relief is on the horizon here and there.

Many taxpayers* have been confronted with new regulations since this year - some of which can also bring them cost advantages. Here is an excerpt of what is changing for many consumers, which regulations are being extended and what will soon have to be said goodbye.

Basic allowance increased by 204 euros in 2022

The so-called subsistence level must be tax-free for everyone.

There is a

basic allowance

for income tax .

And this basic allowance has increased with the new year - by 204 euros.

"After an increase from 9,408 euros to 9,744 euros in 2021, it will be raised again in 2022: to

9,984 euros

",

the Federal Ministry of Finance announced on its website at the end of 2021.

In the case of a single person, income tax is only due from a

taxable income

of more than 9,948 euros per year.

The amount doubles for married couples or registered partners to 19,896 euros, as the German Press Agency (dpa) further described.

Higher relief amount for single parents also in 2022

Single parents

are relieved of wage and income tax with a special allowance, as the Federal Ministry of Finance further informed on its website.

For the years 2020 and 2021, the federal government has increased the annual relief due to the

Corona crisis

 to 4,008 euros, it said.

And further: "As a sign of the situation of single parents as a whole, the amount will now apply indefinitely from 2022."

Tax-free Corona bonus possible until March 2022

In order to take account of

the difficult conditions in the

corona pandemic , the federal government has made it possible for employers to make a special allowance for their employees - meaning the tax-free corona premium.

"Bonus payments (aid and support) of

up to 1,500 euros

can be paid out tax-free since March 1, 2020.

This regulation is still valid until March 31, 2022,” said the Ministry of Finance’s website at the end of December.

If such an

extra premium

is planned for employees, employers should hurry.

More information about the tax-free Corona bonus is available here.

Also use the home office flat rate this year - document working days

According to the will of the federal government, the tax regulation for the

home office flat rate should

also apply to the year 2022, as dpa describes.

If in doubt, employees should be able to prove when they worked from home, the report says.

"It is advisable to make notes in the calendar for the year 2022 on which days you worked exclusively from home," says one of the tips from Jana Bauer from the Federal Association of Income Tax Assistance Associations, according to dpa.

According to the current tax regulations, you can

set 5 euros per day in the home office

, and

a maximum of 600 euros per year

.

However, what those affected have had to take into account so far: The sum is one of the  income-related

expenses

, for which all taxpayers are charged a flat rate of 1,000 euros anyway.

Only those who spend more than 1,000 euros here ultimately benefit from the special regulation.

Incidentally, the home office flat rate is entered in the

tax return

in Appendix N (in the income-related expenses).
