The discounter Aldi only wants to sell milk from levels three and four in the future.

Aldi is not the only supermarket chain that wants to gear its range to more animal welfare.

Essen/Mülheim ad Ruhr - In the summer, the discounter Aldi announced that it would no longer sell meat from the lowest husbandry levels for reasons of animal welfare.

This animal welfare initiative is now being expanded to include drinking milk.

According to the company, by 2030 at the latest, both Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord in Germany only want to offer drinking milk from the more animal welfare-friendly forms of husbandry 3 and 4.

The Aldi Nord manager Tanja Hacker stated: "The development of the last few years shows that the demand for animal welfare products is growing steadily."

Farming levels three and four guarantee, for example, that the cows get more space, fresh air or even outdoor exercise, as well as GMO-free feed.

Organic products are automatically classified as level four.

So far, the four-stage husbandry labeling was only used for meat and meat products.

This is now to change and will also be specified for milk and dairy products.

The four posture levels:

  • Stage 1: Stable housing

  • Stage 2: stable housing plus

  • Level 3: outdoor climate

In addition to Aldi, the supermarket chain Edeka also wants to ban milk from its refrigerated shelves because it is not kept in an animal-friendly manner.
