Spanish star architect: Ricardo Bofill dies at the age of 82

The Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill is dead. According to media information, the Catalan died at the age of 82.

Bofill was a representative of postmodernism and opponent of the rationalistic and uniform architectural style.

In his buildings, he combined modern materials such as steel and concrete with classic forms.

Bofill, born in Barcelona in 1939, started his career around 60 years ago with his own architecture office.

In Barcelona he designed, among other things, the airport, the Catalan National Theater and the 29-storey W Hotel at the port: its outer shape is reminiscent of a sail.

He also caused a stir with international works such as the Citadel Center in Chicago.

He also designed various social housing projects in French suburbs in the 1970s and 1980s.

Some of them later served as backdrops for films such as Terry Gilliam's dystopia »Brazil«.

Until the very end, Bofill lived in his domicile »La Fábrica«, ten kilometers from Barcelona.

In the 1970s, he converted an old cement factory into a loft and architecture studio.
