Saxa Rubra mausoleums open to the public

After the success of the last extraordinary visits for the European Heritage Days 2021, the Special Superintendence of Rome reopens to the public the tombs of Fadilla and Nasoni, two jewels of the Via Flaminia of great historical and archaeological interest. (HANDLE)


ROME - After the success of the last extraordinary visits for the European Heritage Days 2021, the Special Superintendency of Rome reopens to the public the tombs of Fadilla and Nasoni, two jewels of the Via Flaminia of great historical and archaeological interest. Starting from January 20, every third Thursday of the month with free admission upon reservation, it will be possible to discover or rediscover the two funerary buildings dating back to the 2nd century AD. Located at the eighth kilometer of the Via Flaminia, both tombs are carved into the tuff and embellished with an elegant decoration with mosaics, paintings and stuccos.


    "Reopening the places of culture in an ordinary way - according to Daniela Porro Special Superintendent of Rome - with the opportunity to plan visits and give more people the opportunity to access the monuments, is a significant and constant commitment of the Superintendency. Above all in a case like that of the Saxa Rubra Mausoleums, still little known, and which are part of a wider context of enhancement of the sites located along the Via Flaminia, together with the Arco di Malborghetto and the Villa di Livia ". The Tomb of Fadilla, discovered in 1923, preserves its internal decorations practically intact, starting from the floor mosaic, up to the wall paintings and on the vault. The Tombadei Nasoni, discovered in 1674, has undergone various adversities, but remains due to its size, stucco,for the richness of the depictions with mythological subjects, a testimony of great importance from the Antoninian age.


    For the itinerary, the first visit is at 10.30 starting in via dei Casali Molinario 3 in front of the entrance to the Tomba di Fadilla and ending in via Flaminia 961 at the Tomba dei Nasoni;

second visit round at 12 starting in via Flaminia 961 in front of the entrance to the Tomba dei Nasoni and ending in via dei Casali Molinario 3 with a visit to the Tomba di Fadilla.

Finally, access is allowed, in compliance with the health regulations in force, to a maximum of 10 people per visit;

admission is free subject to availability;
