If a corona infection is suspected, a PCR test will provide clarity because it is considered to be very reliable.

But who is currently entitled to a free PCR test?

Berlin - The Omikron wave rolls over Germany.

Many citizens want to play it safe and check regularly whether they may have been infected.

In addition to the rapid tests, PCR tests provide even more precise information about infection with corona.

But the PCR test is not free for everyone.

The Federal Ministry of Health has made clear statements on this.

Free PCR test: who gets it?

According to the Federal Ministry of Health, the PCR tests are the "gold standard" among the corona tests.

Unlike the self-tests, this test is carried out by medical staff and evaluated in a laboratory.

According to the Ministry of Health, people with a positive rapid or self-test are currently entitled to a free PCR test to confirm the result.

In addition, a PCR test is free for the following groups of people:

  • Contact persons of corona infected people

  • People with symptoms that indicate a corona infection

  • People who have stayed in a care facility, hospital, school, daycare center or similar facility where Corona cases have occurred in the past 14 days

  • Persons who are to be treated or accommodated in a hospital, rehabilitation clinic, facility for people with disabilities or similar facilities

According to SWR, people who do not meet the above conditions must expect to pay 40 to 90 euros for a PCR test.

Special case Corona warning app

If the Corona-Warn-App indicates an increased risk of infection, you are not automatically entitled to a free PCR test.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health, a doctor decides whether a PCR test makes sense or whether an antigen test is sufficient.

It depends on the patient's symptoms and contacts, as well as whether they belong to a risk group.

Where are the PCR tests available?

PCR tests are not automatically carried out at every corona test station.

Some stations only offer quick tests.

In order to have a positive rapid or self-test confirmed, the Federal Ministry of Health recommends a PCR test in a test center - if you have no symptoms.

The medical on-call service on 116 117 provides information about test centers in the vicinity.

According to the Ministry of Health, the family doctor should be contacted by telephone if you have symptoms.
