Five years ago the Rigopiano tragedy, but justice is slow

On the 28th we return to the classroom. Hotel overwhelmed by an avalanche: 29 dead (ANSA)

Last year a sober and private commemoration due to the pandemic.

And in ten days five years will have passed since the tragedy of Rigopiano, from the avalanche that on January 18, 2017 on the Abruzzo mountains swept away the resort of Farindola (Pescara), leaving 29 people lifeless under the rubble.

2022 could be the year of the sentence in the trial of the thirty defendants for the disaster, accused, in various ways, of murder, multiple culpable injuries, culpable disaster, building abuses and false ideology.

We return to the courtroom, in the Pescara Court, on January 28th.

Of the 30 defendants, 29 were those who chose the abbreviated procedure: representatives of the Abruzzo Region, the Province of Pescara, the Prefecture of Pescara and the Municipality of Farindola, some representatives of the destroyed hotel and 7 prefectures accused of misdirection in a file which was then reunited to the parent proceeding.

The shortened procedure will be discussed in front of the judge for the preliminary hearing Gianluca Sarandrea: first, however, the advice on the prosecution and defense panel reports must be filed. The judge appointed a panel of experts to settle the question concerning the origin of the avalanche of January 18, because the expert assessments produced by the prosecution and the defenses are conflicting. The report of the prosecution points, among other things, on the failure to produce the avalanche map, on the clearing of the access roads to the resort at high altitude and on the presumed late setting up of the rescue coordination center; that of the defenses concerns the fatality, the unpredictable nature of the earthquake that preceded the avalanche. The new appraisal will most likely need an extension, given the complexity of the matter. The experts appointed by the GUP will take into consideration, for example, the possibility that natural events, including seismic phenomena, "may have had an impact on the triggering of the avalanche" and will also evaluate the role and effective use of the snowploughs supplied to the Province of Pescara.

"It is a mammoth process, with thirty defendants who have the right to verify the documentary production, and as many as 120 civil parties. There have been physiological postponements from a procedural point of view and the pandemic, in 2020, certainly did not help. I'm not surprised. of the fact that all this time has been wasted ". Speaking is the lawyer Camillo Graziano, lawyer of Alessio Feniello, father of Stefano, one of the 29 victims. "Something better could have been done, there have been hearings that have not helped. Now on January 28 the judge, having filed the report and verified the outcome, should give us a calendar.

Precisely because there is an abbreviated procedure, it should now be possible to schedule one hearing per week.

Of course, seeing so many referrals based on technical issues is very difficult for family members.

But on the 28th, finally, we will begin to talk about Rigopiano ".
