PCR test and rapid test are two methods that can be used to detect a coronavirus infection.

Where the swab is taken depends on the following factors.

  • Some describe it as extremely unpleasant, while others find it short and painless: the corona test.

    A distinction is made between

    quick test*

    , PCR test and self-test

    .

In contrast to the quick and PCR test, the latter can be carried out independently without the help of trained personnel.

  • The PCR test is considered the safest way to detect a

    corona infection

    .

  • The physicians and helpers who carry out the test decide whether a smear test is required from deep down the throat or whether it is sufficient to simply insert the stick into the nose.

The type of test depends primarily on what information the doctor wants to collect

    .

In principle, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), as the central institution of the federal government in the field of disease monitoring and prevention, recommends a corona test that includes a sample from the throat and nose.

However, potential corona patients are increasingly reporting swabs exclusively from the nose or throat

.

In an interview with the Hamburger Morgenpost (MoPo), Professor Doctor Johannes Knoblauch, head of the hospital hygiene department at the University Hospital Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE), explained what is behind it.

Protect yourself against coronavirus infection - with copper tape

Use the antiviral and antibacterial effect of copper in your own four walls.

Applied to doorknobs or window handles, copper tape also inactivates corona viruses.

The corona test itself also varies depending on the goal pursued during the test. According to Knoblauch, a combined swab should always be taken from the nose and mouth if it is to be examined whether a Covid 19 patient has survived the infection .

This would give you the greatest possible certainty that the person tested is no longer infectious.

The corona test for people who show symptoms* usually works differently

Corona test: "If you want to look for possible sick people, a throat swab is sufficient"

"

If a person is already showing signs of illness, it doesn't really matter where the smear is taken,

" says Knoblauch. In this case, the virus had already spread over a large area in the throat and nose. And since these body regions are connected, the virus would be detectable in both places, reports the MoPo. In test centers, often only a throat swab is taken: "If you want to look for possible patients, a throat swab is sufficient," says Knoblauch. However, it should be borne in mind that a test will only be positive on the third day after infection with corona viruses. It would take an average of five to six days for the first symptoms to appear, which is why two corona tests are usually carried out at a time apart if an infection is suspected.
