A major winter storm with snowstorms, hail and tornadoes is causing chaos in the eastern United States from Florida in the south to the state of Maine in the north: tens of thousands of households in the southeastern part of the country were cut off from the power on Sunday, US media reported.

Two people drove their car off the road in North Carolina on Sunday and died in an accident, a highway patrol spokesman confirmed to CNN television and other media.

Even in the sunshine state of Florida, the storm area made itself felt in the form of snow flurries and tornadoes.

At least 28 homes were destroyed in Southwest Florida, local authorities were quoted as saying by CNN.

According to media reports, states such as Georgia declared a state of emergency.

On Monday there will be heavy snowfall in the northeast and then on Tuesday it will move towards Canada's southeast, the US weather agency National Weather Service said.

More than 50 million residents are affected, reports CNN.

Heavy gusts of wind expected in New York

More than 3,000 flights were already canceled on Sunday, and hundreds should also be canceled on Monday, according to the FlightAware.com portal.

More than 130,000 households in the south-east of the country were without power early Monday morning, especially in North Carolina and South Carolina, Virginia and Georgia, according to media reports citing the PowerOutage portal.

According to CNN, 20 to 30 centimeters of snow are forecast for Monday in cities such as Pittsburgh and Buffalo in New York State.

There could also be strong winds and flooding along the coast from Virginia to Maine.

Wind gusts with speeds of almost 89 kilometers per hour could also be felt in the metropolis of New York City.

A heavy snowstorm had already swept across the US east coast in early January and had partially paralyzed public life in the affected regions.
