The dishwasher is used almost every day in many households - and therefore needs appropriate care.
These home remedies help with cleaning.
The dishwasher lets your pots, plates and cutlery shine again - while you relax on the couch.
But many people rarely think that the dishwasher could use a cleaning every now and then.
That's why dishwashers have to be cleaned too
Because, contrary to some opinions
, the appliance does not clean itself during the rinsing process
- instead you have to lend a hand every now and then and ensure that the dishwasher can continue to do its job for a long time.
Finally, over time,
numerous deposits form due to limescale or residues of food or dishwashing detergents
.
This can lead to
blockages
, which in turn lead to
bacteria and fungi
and limit the functionality of the dishwasher.
Luckily, there are some home remedies to help you with this.
Dishwasher: How often do the components have to be cleaned?
At the latest when the machine starts to smell unpleasant or takes longer to rinse, you should give the device a cleaning.
However, it is even better if you
clean the device at least every one to two months
, depending on how often it is used .
The following components then need a cleanse:
spray arms
Sieve
sealing rubbers
While you are at it, you should also check whether there is still
enough rinse aid and salt
in the machine - if you are not already using Multitabs that contain these agents.

Instructions for cleaning the dishwasher: How to proceed
When it is time to clean, do the following:
1. Clean the sieve with home remedies
Take the strainer out of the machine - if you're not sure how it works on your machine, consult the instructions for use - and rinse under running water.
Adding a little washing-up liquid or vinegar water is usually enough to get rid of more stubborn dirt and grease stains.
You can do the same with removable baskets.
2. Take out the spray arms
The spray arms of the machine distribute the water on the dirty dishes in a rotating movement during the washing process.
But even in these, deposits form over time due to leftover food, which limit the performance of the device.
You should therefore remove the spray arms - which is easy to do with most dishwashers - and wash them under running water as well.
You can easily remove blockages with a toothpick.
3. Check drain
Check if leftover food is clogging the drain - if so, remove it with gloves.
4. Flush the machine
Run the dishwasher empty once and use a dishwasher tab or powder as normal.
This also cleans the interior of the dishwasher.
You can also use special cleaning agents for this.
5. Clean rubber seals
Immediately after the rinse cycle, you should use the residual moisture to clean the rubber seals with a damp cloth.
After all, grease and dirt deposits have also settled here over time.

Cleaning the dishwasher: This is how it works with baking soda and vinegar essence
If the basic cleaning of the dishwasher has not had the desired effect and there are still deposits, various home remedies can help you. This includes baking soda and vinegar essence. In combination, they have an
antibacterial effect in the dishwasher and kill fungi
. You also decalcify the device at the same time and let unpleasant odors evaporate.
Simply put
one to two tablespoons of baking soda
on the bottom of the empty dishwasher and
20 milliliters of vinegar essence
in the powder compartment.
Then let the machine run through completely with a short program but a high number of degrees.
Afterwards, all dirt and deposits should have disappeared.
As an alternative to the vinegar essence, you can also add citric acid to the powder compartment.

Home remedy tip: How to clean the dishwasher with vinegar and baking soda
However, this tip makes the dishwasher at least as clean - but takes longer because you need two rinse cycles for this.
First put about
200 milliliters of vinegar in a bowl
and place it in the top rack - otherwise the machine is empty.
Then run it once at normal temperature.
The vinegar will descale the device during this time.
Then sprinkle about
200 grams of baking soda
on the bottom of the dishwasher and run it again at a higher temperature (about 60 degrees) - afterwards all odors will be gone and residual stains will be gone.

Cleaning without chemicals: Soda for the dishwasher
If you have washing soda on hand, this is also suitable for cleaning the dishwasher - but also for the spray arms and the sieve.
If water alone doesn't clean them 100%, mix
soda and water
together to form a paste.
Apply this to the stains and rub off the deposits with a cloth.
Then rinse the individual parts with clear water.
You can also use the soda paste to clean the rubber seals.
Soda is also useful for the interior: just put three tablespoons of it on the bottom of the machine and let it run empty at
around 60 degrees
.

Prevent calcification with lemon peel
So that the dishwasher doesn't get full of limescale in the first place, simply rinse a few
juiced lemon peels
with a normal rinse cycle.
Put them in the cutlery basket.
The advantage: afterwards it also smells pleasantly in the machine.
You also avoid rust stains on the cutlery.
