Impressive images from the eruption of the underwater volcano near Tonga in the South Pacific.
These images show a huge cloud of ash, steam and gas forming as early as Friday, spreading 20 kilometers.
The next day, the most violent eruption recorded in 30 years shook the region.
Several satellites recorded the event - even in New Zealand, more than 2300 kilometers from Tonga, there were warnings of a storm surge.
Numerous properties were flooded on Tonga's main island of Tongatapu - a thick layer of ash and dust is said to lie over the island, said New Zealand's High Commissioner in Tonga, Peter Lund on Facebook.
Alexander Matheou, International Red Cross
“We can be fairly certain that the combination of ash and tsunami waves will have caused water pollution. So we can imagine that one of the biggest needs is to provide water treatment and clean drinking water.”
The current situation in the small island state is still unclear, as the eruption cut the undersea cable for the Internet connection.
Australia and New Zealand launched reconnaissance and relief flights on Monday.
