The demographic consequences of the health crisis were less marked in 2021 than in 2020, according to a report published Tuesday by INSEE.
Mortality, although still abnormally high, has fallen and the birth rate, despite a “Covid effect” at the start of the year, has risen slightly.
Consequence of this double evolution: the natural balance, which had reached a historic low last year (at +66,000), recovered slightly, at +81,000. Also driven by the migratory balance (+140,000) , the French population has therefore increased by 0.3% in one year, to reach 67.8 million inhabitants at the start of 2022, according to the Institute for Statistical Studies.
In 2021, 220,000 marriages were also celebrated, up 42% compared to 2020, a dark year in this area due to health restrictions.
The average age of the bride and groom in 2021 was 36.6 years for women and 39.1 for men.
