(ANSA) - ROME, JAN 18 - For the first time since the beginning of the riots in Kazakhstan, former president Nursultan Nazarbayev appeared in a video, denying all the rumors about a presumed confrontation within the country's leadership.

The street protests that began in Kazakhstan on January 2 against the increase in fuel prices, had soon given way to violence and attacks on the buildings of power, especially in the former capital Almaty. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev denounced an attempted "coup d'état" and removed Nazarbayev, 81, as head of the National Security Council. Several officials considered very loyal of the former president have been purged, fueling us on a clash within the regime, and even a departure of Nazarbayev from the country. Now the former autocrat, who for nearly 30 years led Kazakhstan after the breakup of the Soviet Union, claims instead that he is in the capital, Nur-Sultan, and denies that there is any conflict within the regime. "President Tokayev - he says in the video - has full authority. He is president of the Security Council and will soon be elected head of the Nur Otan party. So there is no conflict within the elite. The rumors in this regard are absolutely unfounded ". (ANSA).
