Seven to nine hours of sleep should be enough for most people.

But there are also short sleepers.

US researchers have examined how short the duration of sleep can really be.

If you can sleep six hours a night, are you already happy?

Then you probably belong to the large part of those who sleep badly or always go to bed late* due to stress, children and too many commitments.

But the body needs enough sleep to regenerate at night.

If you don't sleep enough, you are more susceptible to colds*

, for example,

as the hkk health insurance company informs.

According to the hkk, a study by the University of California in San Francisco showed that you are four times more susceptible to common cold viruses if you have slept less than six hours on average for a week.

Many studies deal with the question of what sleep duration is the perfect one.

US researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia and Harvard Medical School in Boston examined how insufficient sleep affects our cognitive performance.

Among other things, they compared the consequences of complete sleep deprivation and a sleep duration of six hours - with astonishing results.

Six hours of sleep is not enough: researchers observe cognitive disorders with short sleep durations

According to the researchers led by Hans Van Dongen from the Center for Sleep and Respiratory Neurobiology at the University of Pennsylvania, no sleep would have similar effects on the ability to concentrate and pay attention during the day as a six-hour night's sleep. According to the study, "A statistical model showed that behavioral attention deficits were nearly linearly associated with cumulative alertness durations greater than 15.84 hours, regardless of the type of sleep deprivation." In the sleep experiment, the researchers divided 48 volunteers into groups, who were each allowed to sleep eight, six or four hours a night for 14 days.

Part of the experiment was also a three-day sleep ban for the study participants.

The researchers' conclusion: "Because chronic restriction of sleep to six hours or less per night resulted in cognitive deficits equivalent to total sleep deprivation for up to two nights, it appears that even relatively moderate sleep restriction preserves waking neurological function can seriously affect healthy adults".

The result: difficulty concentrating, slower information processing and difficulties in solving problems.
