The »Stuttgarter Nachrichten« (»StN«) and the »Stuttgarter Zeitung« (»StZ«) intend to cut around 50 editorial positions. This corresponds to about 20 percent of the entire editorial team. The reduction is to be implemented by the end of the year without any redundancies. "All external locations will be retained," said "StN" editor-in-chief Christoph Reisinger on Wednesday in Stuttgart. At a works meeting on Wednesday, the editors were informed about the plans.

Despite the massive job cuts, the digital offerings of the newspapers are to be strengthened at the same time.

Instead of the previous departments, topic teams are planned, which should also win new readers with their reports.

"We're not withdrawing from the local or sub-local," said Reisinger.

In the future, however, there will only be four instead of five books in the print edition.

Up to now, the fifth book has contained reports from the districts.

According to the publisher, the many newspaper titles in the country that are supplied by the »StN« should also be better interlinked in terms of journalism.

Together with all local partner newspapers, the »StN« has a printed circulation of around 500,000 copies.

The two sister newspapers »StN« and »StZ«, which belong to Südwestdeutsche Medienholding, are to further intensify their cooperation - the two titles, which had previously been independent for decades and had significantly different journalistic and political profiles, were largely merged in 2016.
