(ANSA) - ROME, 19 JAN - A person died following a shooting in the center of Nice during a judicial operation by the French police in which the arrest of two suspects for a murder had to be carried out.
"Something went wrong in a police operation, a policeman opened fire on some people," prosecutor Xavier Bonhomme told the press, taking stock of the situation.
"We were carrying out an operation - he added - concerning a murder committed on December 24. Suspects had to be stopped. But something went wrong and a policeman opened fire on some people. One wounded died at 12:30. I asked for the 'opening of an internal investigation for the crime of voluntary homicide ".
The prosecutor specified that "the policeman is in a steady state" and that "no weapons were found on the victim".
Several people were arrested in the operation and their car was searched.
