(ANSA) - NEW YORK, JAN 20 - "Women on the verge of a dinervi crisis" will become a series for television: according to the "Hollywood Reporter", Apple TV has obtained the rights to the 1988 "cult" film it made the fame of Pedro Almodovar allowing him to win his first Oscar nomination. Gina Rodriguez of "Jane the Virgin" would play the part of the voice actress Pepa who was originally played by Carmen Maura.
The Apple series, according to "THR", would be shot in a mix of Spanish and English. Inspired by Jean Cocteau's "The Human Voice", "Women on the verge of a nervous breakdown" won five Goya awards, the equivalent of the Oscars in Spain. Almodovar, whose latest film "Madres paralelas" was not chosen by Spain as a national Oscar nomination, would be executive producer with Rodriguez and Eugenio Derbez of "Coda".
The screenplay was entrusted to Noelle Valdivia ("Masters ofsex", "Mozart in the jungle" and "Smash"), who will also be lashowrunner if the project goes beyond the first phase of development.
Presented at the 45 / o Venice Film Festival, "Woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown" made Almodovar breakthrough at international level: in addition to the Goya awards, the film with laMaura, Antonio Banderas and Julieta Serrano was nominated for an Oscar, a Bafta and at the Golden Globes.
If the project continues, it will be the first on TV for the 72-year-old Spanish director who has award-winning films such as "All About My Mother" (1999 Oscar for best foreign film) and "Talk to her" (best original screenplay in 2002).
