A deadly family dispute broke out on the Spanish holiday island of Formentera. According to current knowledge, an 80-year-old German shot his grandson and daughter-in-law and then committed suicide, the newspaper Diario de Mallorca and other media reported, citing the authorities. The 22-year-old grandson was seriously injured and taken to a hospital on the neighboring island of Ibiza by helicopter. Spokespersons for the Samu emergency service and the Guardia Civil police unit confirmed this information on request.
According to the information, the incident happened in Can Miguel in the south of the small Mediterranean island, which has just over 12,000 inhabitants and is located almost 150 kilometers southwest of Mallorca. The pensioner, who lived on the island, threatened his daughter-in-law with a pistol from the driver's seat of a car for reasons that are still unknown, when the 45-year-old wanted to take one of her underage children to school. The woman's 22-year-old son then rushed to her aid. After a brief scuffle, the pensioner fired several shots, reported "Diario de Mallorca", citing eyewitnesses.
The young man – who is also said to be a German citizen – was hit in an arm and a leg and seriously injured.
But he was "stable and conscious," it said.
He is being treated in a hospital on the larger island of Ibiza, a few kilometers north of Formentera.
His mother was hit by a bullet in the arm and only slightly injured.
