Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier sent condolences to Anita Krüger on the death of her husband Hardy Krüger. "I was deeply saddened by the news of your husband's death," he wrote. "With Hardy Krüger we are losing a great German actor who was just as at home on the stage as in front of the camera." But also as an author and as a world traveler, Krüger “brought other cultures closer to each other with his reports across all continents”.
Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth praised the actor's "artistic power".
Krüger has cast a spell over millions of people as an actor, writer and world traveler for decades, said the Greens politician, according to information on Thursday in Berlin.
»Even as a border crosser and a convinced democrat, his admirable commitment against right-wing extremism will not be forgotten.«
In the TV show "Weltenbummler" he reported "with an alert eye and great empathy on his impressions of countries and cultures all over the world".
»We will miss Hardy Krüger's artistic power and his clear stand against right-wing violence.«
On Twitter, Hamburg's Senator for Culture, Carsten Brosda, praised the actor as "one of the most important voices in post-war Germany".
Krüger was not just a special actor, "but a world star and cosmopolitan with attitude who was committed to right-wing violence to the end".
The actor Hardy Krüger jr.
expressed his sadness at the death of his father in moving words.
»You hold your breath, the world stands still (...).
What remains is love,” he wrote on Instagram.
It is his deepest wish that his father's path will now be peaceful and happier.
»Here the last curtain has fallen on the world stage and the world bows to you, father!«
Many well-known colleagues and friends expressed their condolences under the post, including Christiane Paul, Mareile Höppner, Michaela Schaffrath, Frauke Ludowig, Gitta Saxx and Kim Fisher.
Krueger died on Wednesday at the age of 93.
The native of Berlin, who lived in California and Hamburg for a long time, played the leading role in around 75 films.
He made his international breakthrough in 1957 with the war film »One came through«.
Krüger, who owned a farm in Africa for several years, began his career as a writer with the book Eine Farm in Afrika (1970).
On television, he created a classic as a "globetrotter" in the ARD series of the same name.
His work has been honored with many prizes and awards.
