"On the one hand, the film is about the little moments in life, like bathing a child or talking at bedtime," says director Mike Mills (20th Century Women). “On the other hand, you hear young people thinking aloud about their future and that of the world, so that the intimate narrative unfolds in the context of a much larger story.” The interviews with these young Americans were not scripted and acted out, but recorded during filming by the filmmaker or Phoenix himself.
“We are all responsible for the children of the world that we leave to them and for the actions that we undertake, even if we are not ourselves a parent”, says the actor, very touching on the screen.
"There's also something interesting about the notion that through our guardianship of children, we can become more curious and more open."
The parenthesis experienced by this duo will indeed be transformative, the solitary reporter daring to tell this child what he has never confessed to himself.
