Do you know your hourly wage?

The calculation is not as easy as you might think.

You can find out which formula promises an exact result here.

Most employees only know their gross monthly salary*.

This is usually negotiated with the employer in the job interview and recorded in writing in the employment contract.

The annual salary, which can include additional bonuses, is often used to compare salaries.

But do you also know your hourly wage?

How this is calculated for a fixed monthly salary is shown below.

Hourly wage calculation formula

In order to calculate hourly wage based on your monthly salary, you need to consider one crucial factor.

The

months have a different number of days.

The number of working days and working hours per month therefore varies, while the monthly wage always remains the same.

A whole

quarter

is therefore used to calculate the exact hourly wage.

It is assumed that this includes

13 weeks

(52 calendar weeks / 4 = 13 weeks).

Use the following formula to calculate the hourly wage:

  • Hourly wage = 3 x monthly wage : 13 : (weekly working hours)

So to calculate the hourly wage, multiply the monthly wage by 3 and then divide by 13. This gives you your wage for one week.

Divide this by the number of contractually agreed weekly hours – done!

Example:

Anyone who earns around 2,9000 euros gross per month and works 40 hours a week receives an hourly wage of 16.73 euros gross.

The hourly wage can only be calculated gross

When it comes to the result, however, you must remember that it is the gross hourly wage.

How much of this remains net after all deductions depends on your tax class and is calculated individually.

However, the gross hourly wage is ideal for comparing the new salary with the old salary when changing jobs with different weekly working hours.
